The concept of the Porsche 918 Hybrid was first announced at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Just recently, the prototype ‘918’ was seen in trials and welcomed with enthusiasm by sports car fans and environmentalists alike.
As the first hybrid for Porsche, the ‘918’ is a fascinating mix of outstanding performance and 21st century fuel economy, with a consumption of 3 lt/100 km. The 2-seater chassis is made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) with a two piece targa roof, subsequently it is a super lightweight model. It carries a 4.6 litre V8 engine with a lithium-ion battery and hybrid train, capable of attaining an impressive 770 horsepower. It exceeds 320 km/hr in combined mode and 145 km/hr in electric mode and accelerates 0-100km/h in under 3 seconds in purely electric mode. The plug-in feature fully recharges the battery in two hours. The ‘918’ is ecologically friendly in terms of carbon emissions which, in combined mode, are under 70gr /km.
The Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid is planned to be available on the market from September 2013.
